My latest work, ‘Into Pieces’

This was an emotional piece for me. Typically I work on landscapes or coastlines that have a tranquil effect on me. ‘Into Pieces’ is an exception. It’s angst, worry, passion and self-preservation.

Today, the world has been swept up by the Coronavirus outbreak. Thousands have already died and sadly, more will fall. Businesses are closed, shoppers are fighting over groceries and events have been cancelled.

One of the industries impacted is aircraft manufacturing. Nationwide company closures have resulted in thousands of workers being laid off, without a moment’s notice. My husband is one of those workers.

For the last year, I have been a Homemaker and Artist. Our running joke that I was at least not a starving artist is no longer funny. The luster of the joke disappeared when it became the reality.

After hearing the bad news, I applied to every job I could find (which wasn’t many due to hiring freezes) and took to the canvas.

The woman in the painting is clinging to herself as she fades and fragments into pieces. She is partially exposed to convey the raw feeling of current events, her head bowed so she doesn’t have to watch her fine skirt or beautiful hair wasting away. She represents the struggle to hold it together and the uncertainty of what’s to become.

By Willow Artistry by Christine Wueste

Hi there! My name is Christine Wueste, the face behind Willow Artistry in the Charleston, SC area.

My primary areas of focus are portraits/figure drawings in graphite and landscapes in various mediums. It’s hard to find something more interesting and honest than the human form, more fleeting and enchanting than a piece of beautiful scenery.

That’s the literal ‘what’ of my work but what is art to me? Why do it?

It’s a heartbeat; it’s heartbreak. It’s the words I cannot find though it speaks volumes. It’s so personal yet it’s not just for me. It’s my objective vision but is subjective for others to see their own vision. It is my passion; it is my challenge. It is my heartbeat; it is what my heart chooses to make.
